WHY NEED DRYING EQUIPMENT

Drying the Primer After Painting

Dry equipment can be used to dry the product after spray painting, can reduce the drying time, and for the metal product, drying can help the paint closed on the surface and better for the dipping.

Whatever product you want to dip, the first step is to supply the suitable oil paint on the items such as the cup, if this cup is plastic material, you need to supply plastic primer on the surface, and then dry out the cup for saving time, and then do hydro dipping for this plastic cup.

If this cup is metal, you need to supply base paint on the surface, and then for a good final effect, you’d better dry out the metal cup by drying equipment under high temperature, which step will help the paint closed well on the surface of the metal cup, and the design will be printed on the cup well.

If no drying step under high temperature, to avoid the falling out for the design, you need to supply a kind of texture paint for the metal cup, moreover, the final dipping effect is not the same good as the dipped metal cup with drying step, and you also need to waste more time for drying.

In a word, if you are a hydro dipping business owner, and your product is metal material, you’d better have a drying oven or drying tunnel for hydro dipped products.

Drying the Design After Dipped

For small items hydro dipping, hydrographic dipping business owners always have big quantities once, and you must have a big room to store all of these dipped items such as dipped phone cases for drying out naturally. Generally, there is not enough room for these dipped phone cases to drying the design on the surface, moreover, you still need to supply the gloss paint to cover the design.

Thus the drying equipment can dry out the phone cases in minutes, can save more time on drying dipped phone cases.

Drying the Gloss Painting After Dry the Surface Design

After the water transfer printing process, the phone case needs to be supplied with clear gloss or matte painting, which can protect the design from environmental damages, can expand the service life of the dipped phone case.

Drying the clear gloss or matte painting can save time and this step can enhance the quality of dipped products.

Convection drying helps in the final appearance of the item. Therefore, it is highly essential in cases where there is high mineral content since it is done at lower temperatures. Therefore, hydro drying is an essential step as it ensures the decoration is completely dry and remarkably intact, in that it stays in place for a long time. Moreover, it ensures that there are no blotchy paint results in that there is a smooth coat. Additionally, hydro drying enhances the final appearance of the object, thus increasing its longevity.

Hydro Dipping Drying Equipment

What Is Hydro Dipping

Hydro dipping is an exciting way to decorate any 3D item that can be submerged in water without resulting in any harm or defects. Essentially, hydro dipping is a surface decoration method that uses technology and a specialized hydrographic film printed with natural designs like walnut, marble, burl wood, and numerous geometrical designs that can decorate almost any substrate. Architecture, auto interiors, switches, dash kits, handles, and multiple daily applications give themselves to the hydro dipping process.

Hydro dipping is highly essential as it gives off a new color and appearance on the printed item, therefore, enhancing its value. Notably, it is possible to apply hydrographic pattern to several materials such as metals, plastics, and complex, three-dimensional shapes with top-notch quality. After dipping, there is a necessary process that follows next known as hydro drying. The item dipped can be dried using convection heating or air drying, which depends entirely on the technique being used or the speed preferred.

The Hydro Dipping Process

Clean

The first stage of the process is picking a pattern. One can choose various patterns like camouflage to wood grains, marbles, and metals. Afterward, prepare the object which is imperative for the decorated product’s longevity. Clean the object to eliminate all the residues, greases, and silicones affecting water transfer printing.

Priming and Base Coating

Subsequently, coat the object to be customized with a primer or an adhesion promoter. Next, apply an undercoat; commonly a matte basecoat for mostly auto body works, and in a careful manner, sand thoroughly with an abrasive sponge. Work with some dishwashing liquid to get rid of the surface tension and follow up with a base color, which varies from one hydro dipping design to another. You can apply different base coats to alter the final appearance of the object being customized.

Film Placement

The pattern or image is subsequently printed on water-soluble polyvinyl film, which floats on the water’s surface when unloaded in the water transfer tank. To place the film properly, place it on the water with a dry hand and keep a 30–40-degree angle with the water surface. Subsequently, pull the hydro dipping film ends from one end of the hydro dipping tank to avoid air bubbles. Sliding baffles are used to keep the printed film in place to achieve the right decoration.

Film Hydration

After this, the film will be dissolved thanks to a solvent-based or chemical activator sprayed over with a spray gun in a uniform layer over the entire film in 45-90 seconds. Consequently, the pattern will float on water with a light glimmer. You should ensure that you heat the dipping tank before dipping the object. When the right temperature is attained, the film must have lain upon the surface of the water. Ensure that the hydro graphics film’s right side has been placed before dipping since distinguishing so is vital. Therefore, you can dip one finger and touch a little corner of the hydro graphics film. Afterward, you can fill one sticky side, which is the right side, towards the water.

Water Transfer Printing

The object is then delicately immersed in water. The water conforms with the contours of the object and forces the inks to penetrate the basecoat. Follow up by removing the object from the water, and immediately you can see the object has taken-on the color and design of the original pattern.

Rinsing

The object is thoroughly then rinsed with warm water to eliminate any film residue.

While rinsing, take care not to touch the object by finger as the ink layer at this time is very fragile. Make sure not to use heavy water pressure as it may damage the just coated pattern.

Drying

The object is then dried and top coated with an automotive-grade urethane or a car body clear coat. The topcoat gives the glossy or matte shine and protects the hydrographic pattern from harmful UV rays and chemicals.

Clear Coat

Various topcoats can be used, such as one-component lacquer, matte, baking lacquer gloss, and two-component PU paint. Clear coating is very vital as it assists in sealing in the inks and enables a cleaner, attractive, and finished product. Ensure your chosen topcoat is purified with a 300 mesh nylon screen. If the items are coated with PU paint as a primer with two components, you should adhere precisely to the paint’s manufacture operating instructions. Ensure the spray booth is clean and devoid of dust.

How to Effectively Dry the Dipped Items After Hydro Dipping

It is essential to note that the temperature setting is essential for the hydro drying process. After dipping and top coating, the object is then dried and cured. The temperature setting depends mainly on the material of the product. If the object to be customized is a thermoplastic and nonmetal product, ensure that you use temperatures of less than 60℃. Additionally, if the object is made from metal, ensure that you use a maximum temperature setting of 180℃.

There is the first drying process for hydro drying before you begin hydro dipping. Notably, if you are looking to avoid applying too much paint, you should start with small coats. Consequently, the item should be left to dry for ten minutes after coating.

Ensure that you dry the coat for ten minutes at a temperature setting of 60°C – 200°C depending on the material, in the drying tunnel or oven, until it is approximately 80% dry before proceeding to the next step, the hydro dipping process. The sole purpose of hydro drying after washing is to remove moisture from the object.

Consequently, determining the right curing heat for the top coating follows. The hydro drying time and temperature are entirely reliant on the nature of the finishing coat. It is important to note that the finish coat or transparent lacquer or varnish includes two types: non-banking type and baking type. For the best results, kindly follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the temperature to be used and the curing time.

After you are done rinsing, you can put the object into the drying tunnel or drying oven to remove all the water for approximately 20-30 minutes. Indeed, you can go with the solution of putting them outside and letting them air dry if the sunshine is sufficient enough. Alternatively, you can dry your dipping object in a drying room that is sufficiently heated and has circulating air. It is just as essential to ensure that all parts are thoroughly dried after washing in automated wash stations or by hand.

It is practicable to accelerate the drying process and simultaneously decrease the turnaround time with a curing system. After the part is dry, you can go ahead and examine it for any defects that require some touch-ups. If the defect is too much, the part may have to be prepped and dipped again.

Hydrographic Activator Advantages

This hydrographic activator is a critical element in the hydro dipping process. It is a water transfer printing film that decorates objects that vary from every terrain vehicle and car dashboards to little items such as helmets, car interiors, guns, x-box, and cups.

A hydro dipping activator works optimally with the ink in the films to give optimal results. The following are the advantages of a hydro dipping activator.

Tips On Choosing the Best Hydro Dipping Drying Equipment

Choosing the best hydro dipping drying equipment is highly essential for results or outcomes. If you want the best results, you have to invest in excellent hydro dipping drying equipment. It will help if you start by looking for easy to understand, install and operate. You would not want something complex that you cannot handle or do not have the right personnel and skills to handle.

Appearances are essential, as much as that factor may be overlooked in this sector. You should pick an item that has an appealing shape and structure and a lovely welding craft. This beautiful appearance accentuates the environment around. Moreover, you should ensure that the equipment is made from stainless steel and meets the CE standards.

Environmental Conditions

By most standards, the hydro dipping processor is environmentally friendly. The responsibility lies upon the hydro printing business owner to ensure that all State, Federal and Municipal requirements are followed.  Nonetheless, some aspects require to be addressed with the right environmental regulatory agencies. Hydrographic printing works with water and color that is not harmful to the soil.

The ink films are entirely printed on Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) based film. This film is susceptible to temperature and moisture; therefore, you should store it properly to ascertain long shelf life and correct decorating.

Hydro Dipping Defects and Their Causes

If the object has dents, spongy holes, small bubbles, or a rugged surface, this means that the spray room environment was full of dust. It can also be an issue where there was dust on the surface of the object.

If the film did not lay evenly on water, bubbles existed between the film and the water surface.

Several things may inhibit the film ink from being properly activated to an oily state. The first instance is that water temperature is too high.

Other than that, there could be water drops and oil drops on the film. It may also be brought about by inadequate or little activator sprayed or unevenly sprayed on the hydrographic film. Besides, it may be an event where the activator evaporated rapidly, or you failed to allow adequate activating time.

Bubbles and water drops are brought about by failing to dip the hydrographic film at the right angle, 45 degrees. It may also be caused by dipping the hydro graphics film too fast.

If there are wrinkles on the film, the water temperature is too low, and the film is not thoroughly soaked or softened. Spraying the activator too early or inadequate soaking time may also bring about wrinkles.

To resolve the wrinkles, increase the temperature to about 25°C-30°C. Alternatively, you can let the hydrographic film soak in water for a more extended period. In addition to these resolutions, you should not spray until the film is completely softened and the surface tension is uniform.

If the pattern appears different in wave color shade, it means that the applicator was over-applied hence, causing slipping between the ink layer and the ground film.

Conclusion

Hydro dipping is quite useful as it enables you to get perfect coverage even in hard-to-reach places and difficult shaped articles. Consequently, you have to ensure there is efficient hydro drying to achieve that desired result. Besides, it has been challenging to print graphics such as wood grain, carbon fiber, camouflage, and designer prints on hard materials such as hardwood, metal, and glass. Thankfully, hydro dipping drying equipment make it possible.
